Kurt Allen

Kurt Allen has over 25 years’ experience in the mineral exploration and mining industry, with emphasis on volcanic and sediment hosed epithermal gold-silver deposits. Kurt holds a B.Sc. in geology from Boise State University and a M.Sc. in geology from Idaho State University, and is currently the Director - New Projects for Hecla Mining Company. He has worked for Hecla since 1991 holding various positions, including Senior Mine Geologist, Chief Geologist, Manager of Exploration at Hecla’s Rosebud deposit and operation from 1995 - 2000, and District Geologist, Chief Geologist, Exploration Manager, and General Manager at Hecla’s San Sebastian deposit in Durango, Mexico from 2000 - 2010. While at San Sebastian, Kurt managed the exploration group responsible for the discovery of the high-grade Ag-Cu-Pb-Zn Hugh Zone. Prior to joining Hecla, Kurt also worked for CoCa Mines Inc. and Geodome Resources Limited.

Don Birak, P.Geo.

Don Birak is a geologist with over 37 years of experience in the minerals industry. He served as Senior Vice President of Exploration for Coeur Mining, Inc. (“Coeur”) from 2004 to October 2013. Previous to his time at Coeur, he served as Vice President of Exploration with AngloGold North America, Independence Mining Company, and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting. In 2001, Mr. Birak was co‐recipient of the ‘Bill Dennis Prospector of the Year’ award given by the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada. Mr. Birak received his Master of Science in Geology from Bowling Green State University, in Ohio. Mr. Birak is a Registered Member of SME and a Fellow of the Australian IMM.

Ben Whiting, P.Geo.

Technical Committee  

Ben Whiting is a professional geoscientist with more than 35 years experience in the international mining industry. He has worked for both major & junior companies, managing a wide range of operations from exploration through to production. He has also acted as a special advisor on mining industry matters to government agencies, and is a past Adjunct Professor of Queen’s University in the Geological Sciences & Mining Engineering departments. Mr. Whiting is an “Economic Geology” medal award winner and winner of the 2008 IAC “Explorer of the Year” award for his role in the discovery of La Preciosa silver deposit for Orko Silver Corp. He is a member of the Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC), the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (APGO), La Asociación de Ingenieros de Minas Metalurgistas y Geólogos de México (AIMMGM), the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) and a Fellow and past-editor of the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG). He is the current Vice President of Exploration for Orex Minerals Inc., Barsele Minerals Corp., and Dolly Varden Silver Corp.

Dr. Nick Carter

Technical Advisor  

Dr. Nick Carter, is an economic geologist who has specialized in mineral deposit studies. Dr. Carter has been involved in the mineral industry for more than 50 years and holds degrees in geology from the University of New Brunswick (B.Sc.), Michigan Tech (M.S.) and the University of British Columbia (Ph.D.). The early part of his career included 16 years with the Geological Branch of the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines during which time he was involved in the examination of, and reporting on mineral deposits and districts throughout British Columbia including molybdenum and silver deposits in the Alice Arm area. For the past 35 years he has provided consulting services to major and junior companies in all parts of Canada, the western U.S., Mexico, and parts of Latin America and Asia.
